When your own movements get in the way of

living your full potential…

Do you rock your body or fidget?  Can you close your eyes and stand on one foot?  Do you have difficulty sitting still?  Is your hand writing nearly illegible? Are you aware of the space around you?  Do you bump into things?

The Extra Lesson

What is the Extra Lesson?        Who would benefit from the Extra Lesson Work?

The Extra Lesson™ is based on the work developed by Audrey McAllen in England from the holistic developmental perspective of Rudolf Steiner’s education of the child. The Extra Lesson™ has been further developed to include recent research in the areas of learning difficulties, sensory integration and behavioral disorders.

Practitioners of The Extra Lesson have been trained to check for disruptions in childhood development, and how to remediate those disruptions.

It is clear that no other sensory integration program has come close to developing a program so universal in its application and yet holding such deep spiritual truths and insights.

Children and adults may have an Extra Lesson Assessment relating to the following areas:

  • Challenged Birthing Process
  • Phases of Child Development
  • Movement and Sensory Development
  • Development of Primitive and Postural reflexes
  • The 12 senses and their metamorphosis
  • Spatial Orientation and Body Geography
  • Body Rocking Movements
  • The Development of Children’s Drawings
  • The Constitutional Picture of the Child
  • Class 1 or Class 2 Readiness
  • Planning an Individual Program
  • Painting and Drawing
  • Behavior Management

Children and adults alike can benefit from Extra Lesson assessments and exercises.  Once assessed, there are 33 developmental exercises designed to remediate areas of difficulty, including timing and rhythm, direction, spatial orientation and movement, sequencing, laterality and fine motor control needed for clear speech and successful writing and reading and everyday confidence.  There are general exercises for coordination and body awareness as well as specific exercises to help with particular areas of difficulty and individual situations.

The Extra Lesson exercises give careful and thorough help for drawing, painting, and movement. The difficulties students and adults experience when struggling to learn writing, reading, and arithmetic are addressed with specific activities -- the results? Students in both elementary and high school as well as adults discover new relationships to themselves and the world, and find their path beyond the obstacles they face.
